Series Description

When we first start working as advocates, we are inundated with information on organizational practices, policies and procedures, best practices for working with survivors of domestic violence, and the nuances of working with several specific populations. We complete the 40-hour training, which can evoke many emotions, while being trained on job-specific expectations. It is nearly impossible to retain everything presented to us within the first few months of employment.

To respond to these challenges of learning and retention within the onboarding and orientation process, the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV) Training Institute launched the Advocacy 101 Training Series in 2023. This training series offers quarterly trainings on specific aspects of advocacy work. Each quarter's training focuses on topics that have been identified and will continue to be identified by domestic violence programs as topics that should be revisited or elaborated on with newer advocates. This training is intended for advocates within their first or second year of advocacy work, but we encourage anyone interested in the specific topics to attend.

Quarter 1

For this session, we will be exploring time and effort. Time and effort documentation ultimately tells a story that impacts funding and service provision, so it is important that you understand what is required of you when documenting time and effort and how to do so accurately. Oftentimes, new employers assume that you know how to document time and effort and hand you the forms with few to no instructions. In this webinar, we will be going over the two types of time and effort documentation that you are required to complete: timesheets and personnel activity reports (PARs). When reviewing these types of documentation, we will also discuss tips and guidance that might make filling out timesheets and PARs a smoother process for you.
